How to Create a Digital Marketing Strategy

1. Analyze your current data

Before you can decide where you want to go, you need to look at where you are. The best digital marketing strategy starts with looking at your current data so you can clearly see your starting point.

Some key data to look at:

  • Review analytics from the previous year, including sales, website analytics, abandon cart, email open rates, and click-through rates, etc.

  • Compare your business to your competitors by utilizing sites like SpyFu.

  • Review data on your current customers and/or target audience. If you don’t have a ton of data, utilize sites like Google Trends to see search trends.

2. Build out your strategy and goals based on data

Now that you have some current data, you can start building out a strategy and thinking about your goals. There are many different ways to do this, but we like to discuss SMART goals.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. By setting SMART goals, these will be the foundation of a successful digital marketing strategy.

  • Specific: The more specific the goal the better. Instead of saying, “I want to increase sales this year”, a more specific goal would be, “I want to increase goals by 10% in the first quarter.”

  • Measurable: You can’t achieve what you can’t measure. Whatever your goal, you need to be able to measure it.

  • Attainable: This is where you need to balance ambition and realism. It’s great to have big goals, but you also need to make sure they are realistic to achieve.

  • Relevant: A SMART goal is relevant to your business growth. For example, if you want to increase sales by 10%, then you need to set relevant goals that will help you achieve that increase.

  • Time-based: The most successful goals have a timeline. It provides structure and gives you an idea of how much time it takes to achieve a goal for next time.

3. Define your target audience

In order to start building out which digital marketing strategies are best to utilize in order to reach your goals, you need to understand your target audience first. This goes beyond the typical demographic information but really dives into as many specific points as possible.

4. Choose the best channels and marketing tactics

Based on your data, goals, and target audience, you can now determine the best channels and tactics for your marketing strategy. If you need to be on social media, you’ll need to pick between Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat, or perhaps utilize more than one platform. Do you need to have a YouTube channel? Will advertising on other sites, such as Yelp and NextDoor, be helpful?

5. Execute, analyze, and adjust

Once you get going, do the best you can to work toward your goals. But keep in mind you can always adjust as you move forward. For example, if you’re implementing an advertising campaign and not getting the results you hoped, scrap it and figure out what went wrong. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the data so you know if you’re being successful.
